Marc Potts is a fantasy artist and folklorist, whose visionary art has received wide acclaim through the exposure of his work on book covers, both fiction and non-fiction, and in magazines, most notably for pagan publications such as Pentacle, The Cauldron and Pagan Dawn, and also fantasy art publications like ImagineFX. Intrigued by the outer world and propelled by the inner, his work is an attempt to merge the natural and the supernatural, often with a nod towards the macabre and the bizarre.
“The beauty of the natural world has always inspired my art and I’m lucky enough to live and work near the wild and beautiful landscape of Dartmoor, an area that has inspired so many artists, writers and poets. A lot of my art is based around my spirituality as well as the landscape that I see both around me and within me. My subjects are the nature-spirits and elementals, manifest representations of the ancient spirits of place. Sometimes my paintings are representations of goddesses and gods, both the named and the un-nameable. Although I’m probably best known as a faery artist, a lot of my work has a darker, pagan edge to it.”
“Folklore and mythology play a large part in both my artwork and my writing, whether I’m writing and illustrating my own inventions for the pure joy of creating, or whether I’m working to a brief for a commissioned piece of work. I am an avid devourer of all things folkloric, tales from all over the world, and I am always reading, scribbling notes in books or doodling as the inspiration takes hold.”
“Currently, I am working on a series of short stories and folktales centred around Dartmoor, an ongoing project on Tree-Spirits, a book on Goblins, a 'How to paint' book on Dragons and the ‘Shared Legends’ art project for the film ‘Sir Lanval’ being made by the Chagford Filmmaking Group and in association with the Centre de l'Imaginaire Arthurien in France. Over the next few years I will also be working on a number of art and design
projects with my partner Kelly Martinez
